Stay Calm!!!

Today when i was in this department store I saw this quote written on of the magazines in display which goes something like this(don't remember the exact words,my apologies) :-"Anybody can provoke a dog to start barking. If anybody can provoke me to get angry than what am I?"

This one struck me real hard since its such a wonderful thought. All of us do get angry one way or other.According to Oxford dictionary- Anger is a display of emotions such as displeasure, annoyance or hostility.None of these words indicate anything positive or desirable.

According to a study from Ohio State University, those who had less control over their anger tend to heal more slowly from wounds. In addition, anger tends to release extra cortisol in the body.
If anger is so bad why do we all get angry? Why do we feel victorious for yelling at the stray cycle wala who jumped out of nowhere in front of our car without any warning, leaving a frown on our face for the rest of the drive?I had attended this Isha Yoga session and a wonderful thought was presented by the instructor,he asked us to learn yelling without getting angry.Initially i was all skeptical about this idea-How can you raise your voice and be rude without actually getting angry from inside? But then i realised how helpless we were.We are not even able to modulate our own voice to reprimand the wrong doer without releasing this extra cortisol in the body.

Anger is a expression used for self defence by the animals to protect their space. When we human beings are not able to take control of a situation, this animal just comes out.But I do agree certain situations demand a verbal reaction from us.But why don't we try doing this without actually getting angry. Why don't we try actually speaking out the stuff to be spoken as the situation demands, without that actually effecting our mental and physical health.

I know its easier said than done but I guess it a wonderful thought worth trying..

  1. Good one Ritu, couldn't agree more on some of your thoughts!

Though I have this opinion of yelling. "Yelling" is defined as sharp / loud cry with surprise or delight - how often do we use the word yell, when it's not to represent anger, and it's true to certain levels - you know why, when I get good marks, or when I succeed in doing something, the delight really doesn't come from the fact that you have done something great, great is an ever down graded term as you constantly elevate your benchmarks. You yell because you have proven several others wrong and have defeated your own deprived self confidence :). So it makes sense for me to yell in anger!

But yeah, it's a thought worth trying ;)

  2. Thanks Anand for taking time to read and comment.I agree that yelling has many expressions and not just anger. but my point is, trying not to get angry. You are most welcome to yell on top of your voice anytime provided you are not angry or irritated from inside.:)
